``BMW sales in June were probably also impacted by the stock market and declining home values,'' said John Wolkonowicz, an automotive analyst at Global Insight Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts. ``BMW's buyers are younger than Mercedes buyers, causing them to feel the pinch more from their declining stock portfolio and home equity.''

Minivan driven to decline
By Christopher Boyce
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

With cross-utility vehicles winning a growing share of family buyers, minivan sales should continue to dip in the next few years, said Aaron Bragman, research analyst with market research firm Global Insight in Detroit.

Demographics hold greater influence on the long trend of minivan sales than the price of gas, he said. Minivans are shunned by Generation X, who rebelled against what their parents drove, Bragman said. Things may change with Generation Y.

"I don't see a return until 2012 or 2013," Bragman said of minivan sales. "Generation Y is still a little too young to be buying minivans."

....Bragman said he expects Chrysler to eliminate one of its two minivans. The automaker already has said it would trim the overall number of vehicles it produces as a cost-cutting measure.

He speculated that the Town & Country would be the most likely target.

"You may not see it immediately, but in the next (vehicle) generation, it simply doesn't make sense to have two minivans," Bragman said.

Consumer pessimism was a major culprit in the June sales slump, said George Magliano, director of automotive research for Global Insight.

"It is the economy, it is gas, it is oil prices soaring, it is consumer confidence falling to levels from the 1980s," he said. Lagging consumer confidence hits manufacturers of big-ticket items, such as automakers, harder than other sectors, he said.

"Any way you slice it, April and May were bad," Magliano said, "June is worse."

UK house prices fell again in June, Nationwide reports
01 Jul 08

Howard Archer, at Global Insight, expects house prices to lose 24pc of their value compared with their August 2007 peak.. “I am wondering if this is now a little conservative,” Mr Archer said.

"If the economy starts to tank and unemployment rises sharply – and it has increased for the last four months – that would have a large knock-on effect onto the housing market, as a number of distressed sellers entering the market.”
