Toyota Considers Fifth Engine Factory in Japan

24 Mar 08

Toyota is considering building a fifth engine plant in its home market of Japan, a company official has confirmed to Thomson Financial News. This follows Japanese press reports this weekend that Toyota has chosen the northern Miyagi Prefecture for the construction of a new engine factory in 2010.
Significance: Toyota is said to be planning to invest between 20 billion yen (US$200 million) and 30 billion yen in the new plant which would have the capacity to build 200,000 engines per year for Toyota’s small range of cars, global sales of which are increasing. Currently Toyota’s northern Japanese passenger car factories use engines built in Toyota’s base in central Japan.
